F21 sunnies

I’m a Forever 21 sunglass sucker.  I was just browsing the shop and saw the sunglass display from across the room.  It sucked me in like a tractor beam.  Who can resist such cheeky prints on sunglasses?  For a whopping $3?!?!  With such cute sunglasses at F21 (although not very imaginative shapes) for virtually pocket change these days (you can’t even get a latte for $3 anymore), who would spend over $100 for Ray-Bans?

Though I suppose Ray-Bans aren’t made with little tiny children hands somewhere in south east asia.  I can only assume that my F21 cheap-o sunnies are…  With baby hands…  Child labor…  OMG, I’m a horrible person.

By lunch time I *only* had 3550 steps.  Our school is in STAR (Standardized Testing and Reporting) testing this week, meaning the kids are spending their mornings reading questions and bubbling while I sit there and stare at them.  It’s very exciting.

BYOBW, or Bring Your Own Big Wheel

Today was easter sunday in San Francisco.  This means, unless you have kids and are playing easter bunny, you are either at the Hunky Jesus Contest at Dolores Park or at the BYOBW race in Potrero Hill (18th street and Vermont, the real windiest street in SF).  Last two years, I’ve made it out to see the ruckus (and my friend Nelson go zooming by on his tricycle) at the BYOBW event.  This year I brought Bambi with me.  She snuggled in my tote bag while we watched and interjected our staring here and there with “OOOoooooos, Whooooaaas, Dayyyyyym, and holy crap!”  Here are a few of my favorite photos from the day.  I love my hometown, SF.

brunch with aly

Brunch with Aly!  We went to Savor, over on 24th street.  Easy, fast, yummy and won’t break the bank too hard.  Aly is my friend Marisa and her hubby Al’s kid.  Aly is almost 3 and a squirmy little kid, as expected.  She’s so cute!

Furlough Friday

It was a furlough friday.  So Aimee, Anne and I went for a stroll around Aimee’s hood.  Right off of 21st street, there is this amazing mural.  Totally worth checking out if you happen to be near by, which is exactly what we did.  I needed to get a picture with the bambi deer thing.  I was picturing it trying to take a bite out of my butt, which is what Bambi tries to do sometimes (poor thing is just too short).

The ‘weekend’ called for the weekend uniform.  jeans, v-neck, a hoodie and my Freitag bag.  This bag is probably the oldest thing I own that I still love and use regularly.  I bought it in Switzerland back in 2001.  It’s so awesome and so well made it’s lasted this long even with hardcore proper use (just about every day for more than 5 years).  Check out Freitag, they make the best bags ever.  seriously.

My mom helped me braid my hair this morning.  I saw it here a few days ago and wanted it.  And since I know people get curious and I field this question all the time (more than you can imagine): Yes, it did hurt.  No it does not hurt anymore.  I’ve had these for years (since 2004 I think).  Yes, I still like them.

P.S.  I’m not mad, this is just how my face is.  People always ask me that too.

Weekend love note

It’s always fun to find love notes left for you from your students on the white board. Yesterday, one of my fav students, “A”, left me this love note.  She found the boxes of preserved specimens waiting to get dissected.  Guess who wants to take physiology next year!  “A” also played photog for me.  Good job, A!

the crying game

Teachers cry. We do, all the time. Especially first and second year high school teachers. A well known secret among teachers is that if you have to cry, don’t do it in font of your students. It will only make it worse.

I have a crying corner where no one can see me, even if they peek in through the window on my door. Another teacher I know has a full sized cabinet that he goes to cry in. Another teacher I know used to lock herself in the supply room to cry in peace.

I almost lost it in front of students once. Students had been throwing things at me and I didn’t know who was doing it. I burst into tears right as the dean of students came and took over so that I could go to the restroom to sob. That was not a good day. In fact, my first year, I was averaging 3-4 days a week of crying (in private, after school after all the kids left). My second year, I was crying about once a month. This year, my third year, I’ve cried twice….both times probably also fueled by PMS in addition to school stuff.

Why we cry: stress, frustration, feelings of helplessness, students who steal from us, disappointment, the list goes on and on and on. On the plus side (or maybe negative side) the crying tapers off with years of experience. Eventually, we become hardened, thick skinned teachers.

I polled a few of my students today and asked them if they’ve ever seen a teacher cry. Each one of them said yes. When asked how that made them feel, the consensus was, “I felt bad for them.” Kids feel for us too.

napa

This is what I’ve been doing since yesterday:

B was on a work trip in Napa this week, so I took advantage of my spring break to crash in on him at his work event.  Lucky me, he was staying at the Carneros Inn, a suuuper nice place.  Our room was pretty insane.  There was an outdoor shower!

We left Napa today, but stopped at the Oxbow Public Market on the way home.  This place is basically just like the Ferry Building, but with Ritual Roasters instead of Blue Bottle and a Kara’s Cupcakes instead of Miette.  I bought 3 cupcakes for myself (2 for later) and B only got one.  =)  B, being 6’4″ also got stuck sitting at the kids table.

I decided to wear my pizza shirt today, since pizza goes so well with wine.  right? And, I seriously love these Forever 21 sunglasses.  They were cheap as heck ($6!!) and so darn cheeky.  I love cheeky, off beat-ish things.

spring break is almost over!  Tomorrow: snowboarding.  Quite possibly the last time this winter season.

spring break whites

I know it’s only spring break and not summer.  But if I don’t start busting out the summer clothes soon, I’m going to start feeling depressed.  There’s no school this week!!!  woot! I went browsing through Downtown SF yesterday and of course had to check out the Madewell sale section.  Surprise!  The skirt I’ve been lusting after for so long is finally on sale!  In my size!  It was my lucky day.  Still, it was super hard to fork over the plastic for an $80 skirt (the sale price even!).  I think I stood in the store for a good 15 min debating over the purchase before deciding to buy it so that I could debate over it some more at home. $80 is a lot for a skirt, no?  I’ve decided to keep it though, justifying the price by thinking about how it would be perfect for a really hot day, and it’s breathable since it’s silk.  I’ve been thinking about the skirt ever since I saw the Madewell spring lookbook, and I’m going to wear the sh*t out of this skirt come summer.  I wore it today to get a start on summer.
