“No offense Ms. Schenck, but you kinda look like a nurse.”

I’ve had this white dress for over a year and today was only the second time I’ve worn it.  It’s been living unworn in my closet this whole time.  I stare at it every once in a while, but that was about it until I saw this post by Cheetah is the New Black.  I was inspired to pull it out and try something similar.  I love the dress, but it’s white.  That means I’m just asking for a big red stain.  Which was exactly what happened today at lunch.  I grabbed a sponge that is normally used for dissecting kits and trays, splashed some soap on it and managed to scrub the heck out of the stain.  Semi success, enough to keep it still looking like a ‘nurse dress’ (Thanks, kid in 6th period, for that comment.  Nothing wrong with looking like a nurse!)

Teachers have outside lives too that we have to remember to nurture.  So this evening was pizza catch up night with Zhaoeezy (Ann).  She was my photog and my comic relief for the night.  Not to mention friend and pizza chef.  Thanks Ann!

brownies

First thing in the morning:    Teen – “Ms. Schenck, do you have brownies for us today?”  Me – “Uhhh, no, why?”    Teen – “Because you look like one!  Hahahaha”

Kids.  They think they are so funny.  Today was the start of our Mental Health unit in Health class. I usually start it off with a 5 min interview where the class can ask me any question they want with the caveat that I can abstain from answering anything I want.  2nd period just wanted to know if I’ve done drugs and/or smoke weed (abstained).  4th period wanted to know about my sex life (abstained) and if I would date Mr. Won (we’re both taken).  6th period wanted to know how I was in high school (awkward and unsure of myself).  All periods asked me if I wanted to get married eventually and have kids.  Two best questions I got today was, “What do you like about teaching science?” and “Who inspires you?”  I like seeing how science can empower people to make better choices for themselves and I love seeing students make sense of their own experiences using principles they learned in science class.  My students inspire me, as well as a large assortment of people both in and out of education.  Brownies inspire me, and there were brownies waiting for me at home this evening, baked by my neighbor.  =)

fern fancy

Today’s outfit was fern crazy.  Surprised by kids again today — no comments on the fancy tights.  huh.  go figure.  I suspect it’s because I made them sing group written songs about nutrition to the tune of twinkle twinkle little star.  It’s really great when kids can laugh at themselves.  I genuinely feel like it helps kids learn how to cope with being on the spot in an embarrassing situation.  Especially when they have a built-in support structure in the form of group members who are also in the same situation.  The group support and the entire class also signing silly embarrassing songs takes away most if not all of the horrifying embarrassment.  I wish you could have all seen it. It was amazing!

My example song that I had to sing by myself to three different health classes today:

vegies vegies oh so green, hope I eat enough of you.     So much better for my health, than a package of Cheetos….vegies vegies oh so green. hope I eat enough of you.   Huzzah!!

I love these tights.  They remind me of sporophytes running up the backs of fern fronds.  or just the leaves.  I didn’t get all OCD this morning with the lines like I usually do.  Oh well.

happy in plaid

One of my TAs (I have one this year!) helped me out yesterday and snapped these photos.  She kept laughing at me, and when I told her I kept a blog, she shrugged and was all, “I know.”   …  huh.

Physiology 5th period: the usual class commenter said, “Ms. Schenck you look like a picnic today.”  awesome

I saw this dress a while ago on refinery29.  I liked it and made a mental note.  At the time even on sale, it was more than I was willing to shell out.  A few weeks later, lo and behold, I came across is in the sale dungeon of Urban Outfitters with and extra 50% off the sale price.  woot woot!  I grabbed it, debated keeping it for a few days, and ended up wearing it.  It’s a good day/work dress (with leggings, as it is super short on me).  quirky colors means teenager eyes are more attracted.

Madewell Love/Drool/Lust

I’m obsessed with Madewell.  Our San Francisco Madewell just opened this past July, but I’ve been stalking Madwell ever since their online retail debut.  It’s my favorite store.  It’s the  cooler, hipster J.Crew.

The new spring collection looks came out recently and I’m feeling giddy.  Super cute stuff…and my new dress is part of it!  Perfect teacher outfits! I die.  I lust. I drool.   I wait….for sales.I constantly have to remind myself that I am on a teacher’s budget.  Madewell sadly, is more often than not well outside of that budget.  It’s a process, but sometimes I end up with great deals.  I wait and wait for things to go on sale.  Then I wait and wait for the extra 30% off sales campaigns.  Then I go to the store to see if they have it in stock to save on  shipping.  Only then do I splurge on Madewell.  The spring dress I just bought, from look #1 above, was brand new to the store, but there was a 30% off all dresses promotion going on which brought the cost down to about $90.  There was a lot of internal money guilt back and forth, but in the end I knew I had to have it. It was just too cute to pass up. Now I will wait for Look 4 and 7 to go on sale!
